Personal Information

Why do I need to provide my date of birth and Social Security number?

That's a good question. Sit back, and we'll tell you why everyone who opens a ShareBuilder account needs to enter a date of birth and a Social Security number.

This information is used for several purposes, including:

  • Tax reporting;
  • Verification of eligibility;
  • Identification purposes in the event that you're locked out of your account;
  • And, the USA PATRIOT Act. To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, federal law requires all financial institutions obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

Tip: Just to put your mind at ease, we don't sell customer contact or account information. That means we won't give your unlisted phone number to advertisers, on the sly.

For more details, please refer to our Privacy Policy.

What if don't have a Social Security number?

Opening a ShareBuilder account requires a valid Social Security or Individual Tax Identification number. Without one of these two numbers, completing an account application is going to be impossible (but, we do appreciate your interest in a ShareBuilder account).

Note: If you're opening a custodial account for a new baby, we appreciate your enthusiasm. But, you'll need to wait until they have a Social Security number to complete the account application.

How can I correct an error in the date of birth on my ShareBuilder account?

You can have your date of birth updated in a snap. Just follow the instructions below:

  • Print and complete the Update Account Information form
  • Include a copy of the account holder's birth certificate or current driver's license showing the correct date of birth
  • Your signature on the form must be notarized or Medallion Signature Guaranteed

Fax Tips: To ensure that your document will be legible after faxing, please consider the following suggestions:

  • If you are faxing a document with a colored background, try making a lighter copy first and then send.
  • If your document has very faint print, darken a copy before faxing.
  • If the document has very small print, try making an enlarged copy before faxing.
  • Use blue or black ink – red and green ink do not fax well. If the original document includes red or green ink, fax a copy instead.

How do I correct an error in my Social Security number on my account?

If your Social Security number is wrong, we can get that fixed; we just need a few things from you. Please fax or mail the following for each person on the account:

  1. An IRS W-9 form available here, with your ShareBuilder account number(s) listed on the form.
  2. A copy of your driver's license or other state-issued ID or U.S. Passport (for minors, we need a copy of their birth certificate).
  3. A copy of your Social Security card or other documentation issued by the IRS or Social Security Administration that shows the correct Social Security number or Tax ID number. Note: Tax returns and W-2s aren’t considered IRS documentation.

What are the citizenship requirements to own a ShareBuilder account?

We have a couple of requirements in order to use and maintain a ShareBuilder Account (so, here we go):

  • You'll need to be a US Citizen with a valid Social Security number
  • Or, a resident alien with a valid Individual Tax Identification number
  • Also, you need to be physically located in the United States, with one exception:
    • Members of the US Armed Forces, who are stationed overseas, don't need to be physically located in the United States to maintain a ShareBuilder account. We just ask you to provide a home state of record, instead.

Is the ShareBuilder site secure?

You bet the ShareBuilder website and apps are secure. Our tech department has mad computer scientists whose job it is to make sure your account stays safe. For investors who like technical details, we'll match the encryption level of your browser up to 256-bit.

We also use a bunch of physical, electronic and procedural methods to safeguard our systems and your information.

Tip: For a fun read, please refer to our privacy policy or review the Security and Protection section. There, you'll see legal jargon that says we'll never sell your contact or account information.
