Contact Information

Am I required to keep current contact information on my account?

We kindly ask you keep every piece of contact information up-to-date on your ShareBuilder Account, including:

  • Home Address (even if this is not the address where you receive mail)
  • Mailing Address (optional, but must be updated if using)
  • Day Phone Numbers
  • Email Address
  • Military or governmental personnel stationed overseas must also provide their state of record

In certain cases, you'll receive documents through the U.S. mail, even though our main form of communication with our faithful investors is through email.

Tip: Please be sure to update your contact information for all of your ShareBuilder Accounts whenever there is a change. If we are not able to contact you, access to your account or features may be restricted or your ShareBuilder Account may be closed.

Why do you need my home address?

So we can send you singing telegrams, of course! All jokes aside, securities regulatory authorities and the IRS require all brokerage firms (including ShareBuilder) to jot down your home address, even if you don't receive mail at this location. An account cannot be opened without this information. Also, errors in these fields may prevent your account from being approved for trading, which isn't what we want to happen, either.

If you choose to receive mail at an alternate mailing address, you can list this address at any time.

Tip: We restrict access to personal customer information to employees and service providers that have legitimate business purposes. We won't ever sell your customer contact or account information. For more details, please refer to our Privacy Policy.

I don't get mail at home—can I provide a mailing address?

If you have a mailing address that's different than your home address, we've got you covered. Just add a mailing address during the account setup by checking the Enter a separate mailing address box on the 'Contact Information' page. Then, you will be shown additional fields to store this information.

To add or edit a mailing address after your account is open, please follow these instructions:

  1. Sign in at www.sharebuilder.com
  2. Go to Accounts > Overview > Profile & Settings > Personal Info (Sign In required)
  3. Select Edit in the 'Your Information' section
  4. Check the Enter a separate mailing address box to expose these fields (if entering a new mailing address)
  5. Enter or update your mailing address in the fields provided, then click Save

Updating your mailing address will update the address for all of your ShareBuilder Accounts.

Tip: Incorrect contact information may result in your ShareBuilder Account being restricted from trading. If your mailing address changes in the future, be sure to update this information promptly.

My mailing address is a P.O. Box – is that okay?

Yes, you can use a P.O. Box address as your alternate mailing address, but we still need a primary address listed on the account.

How do I update my address?

If you need to change your home address please follow these instructions to get started:

  1. Sign in at www.sharebuilder.com
  2. Go to Accounts > Overview > Profile & Settings > Personal Info (Sign In required)
  3. Select Edit in the 'Your Information' section
  4. Enter or update your home address in the fields provided, then click Save

Tip: You can also edit your mailing address from this page, or you can add a mailing address by checking the Enter a separate mailing address box.

Why do you need my phone number?

Industry regulators and the IRS require every brokerage firm to record the phone number of their account holders. An investor cannot open a ShareBuilder account without this information. Also, errors in these fields may prevent your account from being approved for trading.

Am I required to provide an unlisted phone number?

Yes. We are required by securities regulatory authorities and the IRS to collect your day phone number. So, we're just following the rules, too.

Tip: We don't sell customer contact or account information, so your unlisted number is not at risk of being released to advertisers. We restrict access to personal customer information to employees and service providers that have legitimate business purposes to assist or provide services to you. Can I enter a mobile number for my day or evening phone number?

Yes, but if this is an alternate or seldom-used number, it may impact our ability to approve your ShareBuilder Account for trading.
